Where is the “app store” for the greater internet?

A few recent observations:

1. Boy the iphone has a really slick/easy interface for buying little chunks of apps and content that are not only super easy to find yourself buying, and also don’t even cost that much. (Blackberry just announced one too)

2. On the web, ad revenues are out of whack with the value of content. I get a ton of value out of a lot of web apps like gmail or web content through my feeds and so forth. If there was an easy enough, low-friction enough way, I’d be happy to pay some amount for a lot of this stuff. At least more than the nano-cents worth of ads I’ve ever never clicked on.

3. The long tail is getting killed by ads. You need a sick amount of traffic to make sense as an ad-supported business model. Um, whatever happened to the long tail, or at least the whole middle of that tail?

3b. Optimizing for ad revenue makes for for crappier content (celebrities, gimmicky top-ten lists, link-jacking and other attention mongering cheap tricks) and crappier user experience (superfluous page views, popusp, sites plastered like nascars).

4. There’s a recession coming. This fits in somewhere.

5. Only the valley is crazy enough to still be funding the get-the-eyeballs-first-we’ll-figure-out-the-business-model later

6. If you’re not in the valley and you want to monetize digital content, what’s your plan exactly?

7. Where is our app store for the greater interenet? who will make it happen?

Epilogue/Spoiler alert: You know that worlds are converging right? Cloud/web computing has far-reaching implications that may make this question the answer to it’s own question. We are moving to a world where regular folks will may many screens large and small and one seamless web environment. But that’s a subject for another post.

Addictive: Volvo Ocean Race Game

Puma Ocean Racing

Friends and I are having an inordinate amount of fun playing a virtual sailing race these last few days. Great little flash app lets armchair sailors race along through the same course and weather as the round the world Volvo Ocean Race. Leg one is from the Mediterranean to Cape Town. As a game it’s fun, it’s social and the sailing characteristics of the boats is even reasonably realistic. As a business model the game is pretty clever too, it greatly helps to promote the real race and it’s sponsors and keep fans engaged (engrossed really) for days/weeks on end as the game progresses. The developers also make money by selling small premium features like specialized sails and such.

The virtual race is just like as pictured above (current race leaders Puma Ocean Racing) but with fewer crashing waves of salt water down your pants. And you don’t have to eat freeze dried food for four months. Unless you really want to try and simulate these aspects at home.

So far there are about 20,000 other virtual sailors playing from around the world (a huge hit considering this is sailing we are talking about). New sailors can join in the race any time, you’ll be dropped in the middle of the pack. Recommended. =)

Flash applications have come a long way baby.

My boat is “Spork”, add me to your in-game buddy list.

Summer/Fall 2008 Music Mix is up!

Oddly they were pretty awesome

After kicking around on my iPod for a while, I’ve finally found the time to package and upload this mix to the site. The last mix was in spring, so this one covers all the essential indie-awesomeness I’ve been listening to in the meantime. As it happens, the last one was pretty funky/electo while this one kicks off with a way more retro bluesy/old-school styled indie (good stuff)… but watch for some special dancier bits in the center. For best effect, listen in sequence.

I used to call these mixes “podcasts”, until I accidentally deleted my podcast page a while back. I’ll have work on that.

Here’s the track list:t

1. Dr. Dog – Hang On
2. Human Highway – The Sound
3. Delta Spirit – People C’mon
4. Chinese Food – Test Pilot
5. Mates of State – Get Better
6. Girl Talk – Play Your Part (Pt. 1)
7. Deastro – Light Powered
8. You Say Party! We Say Die! – Opportunity
9. TV on the Radio – Dancing Choose
10. Maybe It’s Reno – Gravestones and Christmas Trees
11. Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal
12. The National – You’ve Done It Again, Virginia
13. Mirah – Dreamboat
14. Shearwater – Rooks
15. Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines
16. Wolf Parade – Call It A Ritual

Enjoy!
